Ed Verosky - Your Instructor
“Over the past several years, I’ve helped thousands of photographers improve their lighting and portraiture. But my new course goes beyond the technical aspects of photography. This is about creating outstanding artistic portraiture no matter what type of camera you have, no matter what your skill level.
“Whether you’re an amateur or professional, if you want to grow creatively and challenge yourself to do better work, this structured and guided course may be just what you need to reach your full potential.”
After Completing This Course, You Will Be Able To…
This is a complete on-line course, designed by Ed Verosky, to guide you through the process of becoming a more creative portrait photographer. Take as much time as you need to actually complete the course — there’s no rush. During this course, we will cover photography techniques using minimal gear, creative approaches to lighting and posing, finding and working with models, developing your personal style and working technique, and portfolio-building and presentation. Ed Verosky will offer encouragement, motivation and personal feedback to help you successfully complete the course.
You will have the opportunity to complete assignments and projects each month, leading up to the creation of your own finished portfolio. The course will be accessible via your Verosky Courses dashboard, and feature text, graphics, audio and video. The following outline (subject to modification) will give you an overview of our schedule. This course can be taken as a stand-alone course, or in tandem with other courses. Some of the fundamental instruction includes topics covered in other Ed Verosky courses and eBooks.
⦁ Introduction & Overview
⦁ Using Minimal Gear: Keeping it Simple
⦁ Camera & Flash Basics
⦁ Lighting & Posing Basics
⦁ Editing & Workflow Advice
We ease into the course with the basics; a good foundation to build from as we move into the more creative and artistic topics and exercises. The idea of working with minimal gear will be introduced; ways to simplify your entire process when it comes to creative portraiture. We will also get into the basics of using your camera and flash, and cover traditional/classic portrait lighting and posing. Finally, a discussion on simplifying your editing/retouching process.
⦁ Discussion on Contemporary Portraiture
⦁ Creative Portraiture: Art, Editorial, Personal
⦁ Professional vs. Amateur Photography
Module Two is where we begin the transformation process! We take a look at the state of the contemporary photographic portraiture marketplace, and why it’s so important to differentiate yourself from others, especially if you want to carve out a place for yourself as a professional. With that said, we will discuss the merits of not “going pro,” too. Creative portraiture for artistic, editorial, and family photography is covered in-depth. This includes an assignment and your first course project.
⦁ Building a Body of Work
⦁ Your Portfolio as a Showcase
⦁ Portfolio Building Strategies & Projects
⦁ Finding & Working with Models
One of the main objectives of this course is to have you build your own, impressive portfolio (to showcase your work on-line or in print). This is something that we are working toward throughout the course. The notion of your “body of work” vs. “portfolio(s)” is discussed and I believe understanding the importance of both will inspire you to not only produce better work, but more significant work. We cover a lot of territory in this module, including portfolio-building strategies and finding and working with models.
⦁ Mastering Your Tools & Technique
⦁ Becoming an Artistic Portrait Photographer
⦁ Your Vision, Your Style
⦁ Completing Your Portfolio
⦁ Portfolio Presentation
This module is where you’ll complete your portfolio with the option to of having it reviewed. I’ve designed these last weeks of the course to serve as your creative and artistic launching pad. We talk about mastering your tools and technique and how to transform yourself into a true portrait artist. By the end of the course, you should have an initial, finished portrait portfolio that you can proudly show to the world! And, you’ll be equipped to continually update and improve both your body of work and future portfolios.
